Sophie Michaux

Sophie Michaux is one of North America’s most versatile and compelling vocalists. Born in London and raised in the French alps, Sophie’s unique background informs her artistic identity, and it comes through in her dextrous voice. Sophie is as comfortable singing grand opera and French chansons as she is singing Corsican polyphony and Björk covers. Her playful, curious approach to music-making has made her an invaluable founder and member of eclectic, award-winning ensembles across New England and beyond.

Sophie is the founder of Tiny Glass Tavern, a cross-genre ensemble featuring a rotating lineup of musical guests performing in an eclectic range of styles. Tiny Glass Tavern’s first album was released on PARMA Recordings in 2025. It’s a delightful celebration of art songs, klezmer, French chanson, and much more.

Sophie is also the co-founder of Culomba, a vocal ensemble that specializes in close-harmony polyphonic singing traditions from around the world. Since 2018, Culomba has taught and toured extensively, bringing rigorously-studied and -researched songs to audiences around the world.

To see Sophie perform is to witness an artist at play. Utterly relaxed, present, and focused, Sophie is a joyful conduit of song, turning eagerly towards her collaborators, breathing in tandem with instrumentalists, deftly manipulating text, melody, and mood with the ear of a master craftswoman.

Her commitment to faithfully interpreting traditional music pairs naturally with her excitement to explore contemporary arrangements and compositions, and culminates in her truly unique programming, which crosses boundaries of time and place with an effortlessness that audiences find irresistible.

When not leading her own ensembles, Sophie can be found singing with Grammy Award-winning vocal band Roomful of Teeth, as well as Blue Heron. Sophie has appeared across the country as a concert soloist, both as a guest for ensembles including Urbino Musica Antica and the Boston Symphony Chamber Players and in solo recitals, world premieres, and more.

Sophie Michaux walks a rare line: she is both an artist’s artist and an artist for people just beginning to explore classical music, world traditions, art songs, and more. As an artist, Sophie is like an open door leading to a garden: a welcoming portal with neverending discoveries awaiting you on the other side.
