 ABOUT
TINY GLASS TAVERN

Picture
Named for the tiny vessels in which one might drink a digestif or an espresso, the ensemble was created to offer audiences an interactive, heartfelt glimpse into a wide range of musical worlds.

“When traveling, I am always amazed when hosts offer a small glass of what is special to them: brandy, olive oil, espresso. A small glass gives you the courage to try it even if you don’t know you’ll like it. It makes you savor it with care, and you can always have more if you like,” says founder and leader Sophie Michaux.

A typical Tiny Glass Tavern performance is intimate, cozy, and interactive – that’s the tavern part. Enter their warm, welcoming space, and pour yourself a little drink or ten, sampling sips of early and Romantic repertoire, Yiddish folk songs, Italian madrigals, French chansons, new compositions, and more. You’ll hear folk songs from around the world, and pop music performed in delightfully unexpected arrangements.

Depending on when you see them, a Tiny Glass Tavern show may feature a chamber orchestra, theorbo, banjo, harpsichord, mandolin, or even accordion (played by Michaux). You’ll find yourself captivated, charmed, and maybe even singing along during one of the many interactive moments.

The heart of a Tiny Glass Tavern is the voice. With a vividly-colorful and expressive instrument, Michaux herself has performed across the country with the Haymarket Opera Company, Lorelei Ensemble, Blue Heron, Roomful of Teeth, A Far Cry, and Les Délices, among others.

Michaux’s love for classical repertoire inspired her to make classical music – and other genres – more accessible and appealing to audiences who typically wouldn’t attend a classical, folk, or international music concert. Tiny Glass Tavern is an exercise in exploration and play – often built on the interests of a specific ensemble lineup. Performers include members of Palaver Strings, Paul Holmes Morton (plucked instruments), Jonathan Hess (percussion), and Fiona Gillespie (voice and whistle).

Tiny Glass Tavern’s debut album Let Us Dance, Let Us Sing comes out on PARMA Recordings in April 2025. So pull up a chair, take off your coat, and let them pour you a tiny glass of something delightful, unexpected, and wonderful.
